Chios History map>>

Chios Island has been inhabited since the Neolithic ages since 6000 BC. Especially at Hagios Galas, in the north of the island and at Emporeio, south of the island there have been cave dwellings.

The name Chios comes from Chiona who was the daughter of Inopion who was the first king, the son of Dionissos and Ariadne. He came from Crete and taught the locals to grow vines. According to the historian Isidoros, the name Chios comes from the Phoenicians which means mastic in Syrian language.
