Most of the current information about the island during the neolithic ages comes from the digs made by the British School of Athens between 1952 and 1955. Since 1970, the Greek Archaelogical Service has been excavating Chios and according to the sizes of the houses at Emporeio, the scholars estimate that there may have not been a social distinction during the neolithic ages and people lived on agriculture and farming.

According to Pherecydes or Leros who was a Greek mythographer and logographer during 450 BC, the island was occupied by the Leleges. They were one of the aboriginals of southwest Anatolia. Herodotus says that they dwelt in the islands of the Aegean. The Leleges were defeated by invading Ionians. They were one of the three populations which the ancient Greece have been divided into. Chios was one of the twelve states of the Ionian League. It was formed at the end of the Meliac War in the 7th century BC. Other Ionian cities are, Ephesus, Teos, Miletus, Myus, Priene, Colophon, Lebedus, Clazomenae, Phocaea, Erythrae and Samos. At the end of 7th century Chios was among the first striked cities and established the sphinx as its symbol which have been a tradition for about 900 years.
