25th March – Greek Independence Day: This is when the Greeks won their independence from the Ottoman Empire. It was granted by the Treaty of Constantinople in July 1832. The anniversary of Greece’s independence on 25th March is a national holiday in Greece.

In March or April – Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday

1st May – Labour Day: It is an annual holiday celebrated world-wide of economic and social achievements of workers.

In June – Holy Spirit Day

22nd July – Local Holiday of St Marcella’s Day

15th August – Assumption: This is to commemorate the day when Mary was taken into heaven with her body and soul united.

28th October – Ochi Day: It is to commemorate the Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas’s rejection of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Mussolini. After the Second World War it became a public holiday in Greece. On this day, public buildings and houses are decorated with Greek Flags.

11th November – Local Independence Day

25th December – Christmas Day: It is an annual holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

26th December – Boxing Day: It is a public holiday which is based on the tradition of giving gifts.
